Construction contractors frequently engage Canopy Tree Service for the removal of trees adjacent to roadways or on land slated for development. Recently, our crews traveled south of San Antonio to a new housing development to remove a large Burr Oak. A short time later our crews removed a Mesquite tree that was near communication lines on a rural roadway east of New Braunfels. After that, Canopy conducted a tree survey on another unrelated commercial tree care project.
Our tree trimming and removal business takes Canopy all over the Greater San Antonio. Texas area. Each commercial tree care project we engage in on a development site is a little bit different. That is what makes our days varied and exciting, said Certified Arborist Lucas Rumancik.
If the project is extra-large, we usually have a seat at the planning table. We may remain involved in the project all the way to the initial watering of newly planted trees, Rumancik said. “Our early involvement allows everyone to anticipate any issues that may arise with tree preservation or with obtaining municipal tree removal permits,” he added.
Tree Survey
Arborists conduct a tree inventory as part of a first step in a commercial tree care project. General contractors determine which trees can be preserved based on the survey and city preservation requirements. They approve the measures needed to protect selected trees. In addition to the written survey, we will attach identifying tags or surveyor’s tape around the trees. Without the tags, construction workers might inadvertently knock a tree down. They help construction workers steer heavy equipment away from the root zone.
“Sometimes I have showed up on a job site and seen three pickup trucks parked at the base of a shade tree on a hot Texas summer day. Everybody looks for a shady place to park their ride on a broiling hot day, but parking under a tree hurts the tree. What’s even worse is when a heavy equipment truck drives across the root zone.” Rumancik said.
Our arborists pinpoint the position of trees on the site. Engineers and other stakeholders compare tree location with road and other development plans. Preserving trees benefits both the environment and the long-term success of a housing development.
Demolition and Removal
Once preliminary planning for a commercial tree care project is complete, we move into the demolition and removal phase. Our job is to take out hazardous and lower quality trees. Meanwhile, other contractors remove old buildings and other undesirable elements of the property.
When Canopy Tree Service undertakes tree removal, it generates two types of waste: logs and branches, both of which are recyclable. Our company processes the smaller branches and limbs through a woodchipper, transforming them into fine pieces suitable for use as garden bed mulch. The larger logs, however, require a different approach. Typically, our crews chop the logs into smaller pieces and place in our trailer for transport to a recycling center. In other cases, we transport the largest pieces to a specialized facility. Here a powerful tub grinder crushes large trees.
At Canopy Tree Service, we recognize the critical role of a safe and effective landscape at every commercial development. Trees need sufficient space for both root and canopy growth. Parking spaces and other paved areas must be harmoniously balanced with the needs of the trees. Canopy prioritizes trees that are in the best health, have good structural integrity, and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, we identify any potentially hazardous trees that could pose a threat to future residents within a housing development.
